Black Walnut is used to make the massive mantel mirror. Each member is over 1” thick. With dimensions of 47” by 18.5” it is a mirror to be reckoned with. Very impressive mirror. Not only in it’s size but in the warmth and character it can add to a fireplace.
One of the few mirrors that I build that uses a method of joining the boards together called “lap joint”. A large notch in one piece matches up with a large notch in the other piece. They all fit together like a puzzle and with a little glue it forms a bond that is also to be reckoned with.
I have decided to let the natural grain do the talking on this arts and crafts mirror. So I hand-rubbed on several coats of Tung oil then rubbed it out with 0000 steel wool. After which I sprayed on several coats of a satin shellac. Lightly sanding between coats.
This mirror could be hung vertically as well. Custom sizes are always encouraged here at Mission Style Mirrors.
Measurements: 47” wide by 18.5” high. Individual boards are 3.5” wide by over 1” thick.
