Black walnut inlays in this piece really give this mirror add character. Combine it with the "through tenons" and you have a mirror that is sure to become a family heirloom.
I have built this "arts and crafts" mirror out of quarter-sawn white oak, which was the wood of choice of the early artisans. After assembly and sanding, I hand-rub on a stain called "Early American" after which I spray on several coats of a satin shellac, sanding lightly between coats.
As usual, customizing to your specifications is encouraged.
